As I was typing away at the NaNo Novel this morning I came to a cross roads, nothing unusual in story telling. Those what ifs, does the Main Character do this now and what happens if she/he does? How will it change things, does she do the stupid thing and miss the opportunity until later, etc. Generally speaking I like making a little doodle with choice and arrows for options stemming from that.
What came to mind was Choose Your Own Adventure Books and how much I loved these as a kid. I know that these have made the transition to the digital revolution and I can't wait to introduce my kid to them when he gets older. I went searching for grown up versions of this type of book and most are more on the other side of grown up. To each their own and all that, but that wasn't what I was looking for. I did find some versions in sci fi, fantasy and action but it seems more aimed towards YA than a grown up audience.
There is Interactive eBooks that look marvelous but once again mostly aimed towards kids. Although I think my kidlet would love a lot of these books now. And naturally it occurs to me that the adult market would probably have some titles to offer as well. A brilliant side note on these books are that some of them are available as text books.
Am I alone in thinking that a grown up could enjoy steering a story in this manner? I have always re-written endings to books in my head to what I thought they should be or what the characters deserved. Or do we as adults just not have the patience to sift through something like this?
I think that this holiday season I will attempt a book like this...
